What to Expect

What Skills Do I Need?

  • No coding required! These bots run off RC components that come pre-programmed
  • You can be in any major, and with any robotics experience! First-timers are always welcome
  • Your team will need to make a 3D model, get it 3D printed, and solder wires. These aren't too bad, especially if you split it up amongst your team. We will teach how to do all of these during our first few build nights!

Cost

Most of the cost for Plastic Ants is the electronics. Your first bot will likely cost between $100-150.
  • Split up the cost by working as a team! A team of 4 only has to spend $25-35 ea. Find a team at build night or on the discord
  • You can reuse your electronics in your next bot! Most bots use the same parts regardless of design
  • If needed, you can sell your parts on the club discord to get some cash afterwards
Beetles will likely cost $200-400

Do I need a 3D printer?

No, you do not need your own 3D printer! BYU has several places on campus where you can have your parts printed:
  • ECEn Shop (CB 416): 15¢/g
  • Prototyping Lab (EB 117): 5¢/g
  • Makerspace (HBLL 4719): 10¢/g
  • Additive Manuf. Lab (CTB 155): $?
